Terms of Service
Last updated: 28 May 2026
1. About us and these terms
CharityWatch is operated by [COMPANY NAME — complete before going live](“we”, “us”, “our”). These terms govern your use of the CharityWatch website and platform (“the platform”). By using the platform, you agree to these terms.
There are two types of user: visitors (members of the public browsing charity profiles) and charity administrators (representatives of charities who have created an account). Additional terms in sections 4–7 apply to charity administrators.
2. What the platform is
CharityWatch is a public directory of UK-registered charities. We provide a platform for charities to publish financial transparency information and impact metrics, and for donors to discover and compare charities.
We are nota donation platform. We do not process or handle charitable donations. Clicking a “Donate” button takes you to the charity's own third-party donation page (e.g. JustGiving). We have no control over and accept no responsibility for third-party donation services.
Charity Commission registration is verified against the publicly available Charity Commission register at the point of sign-up. Our “CC Verified” indicator means we confirmed the charity number exists on the Charity Commission register — it is not an endorsement by us or by the Charity Commission of the charity's activities, governance, or financial health.
3. Visitor use
You may browse the platform freely. Charity profile information is provided by the charities themselves. Whilst we review listings before approving them, we do not independently verify the accuracy of profile content, financial figures, or impact metrics submitted by charities.
We accept no responsibility for information that is inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or misrepresented by a charity. All financial data, impact metrics, and other profile content is self-reported by the charity and we make no warranty as to its accuracy or completeness.
You should exercise your own judgement before making a donation decision. We accept no liability for losses arising from reliance on information displayed on the platform.
4. Charity administrator accounts
To list your charity you must:
- Be an authorised representative of the charity (trustee, director, or designated officer)
- Provide accurate information at sign-up and keep it up to date
- Hold a valid Charity Commission for England and Wales registration number
You are responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and honest presentation of all information submitted to your profile, including financial figures, impact metrics, and uploaded documents. In particular:
- Financial data must be consistent with the figures reported in your most recently filed Charity Commission annual return or accounts
- You must not selectively omit years, time periods, or categories of expenditure in a way that creates a misleading picture of your finances
- Expense categories must be applied honestly and consistently; you must not misclassify costs to inflate your apparent direct-spending ratio
- Impact metrics must be based on reasonable evidence and must not be fabricated or materially overstated
Submitting false, misleading, or selectively presented information is a breach of these terms and may result in immediate suspension or removal of your listing. We reserve the right to request supporting evidence for any figures displayed on your profile.
Keep your account credentials secure. You are responsible for all activity under your account.
5. Subscription fee
Access to the platform for charity administrators is provided on a subscription basis at £5 per month (plus VAT where applicable), billed monthly in advance via Stripe. Your first payment is due when you activate your listing following approval.
Your listing will remain publicly visible for as long as your subscription is active. If a payment fails, your listing will be hidden until payment is resolved. If your subscription is cancelled, your listing will remain visible until the end of the paid billing period, after which it will be removed from the public directory. Your account data is retained and your listing can be reactivated by restarting your subscription at any time.
We reserve the right to change the subscription price with no less than 30 days’ written notice. Continued use of the platform after a price change constitutes acceptance of the new price.
6. Our right to moderate listings
We may suspend, reject, or remove a charity listing at our sole discretion if:
- The charity is no longer registered with the Charity Commission
- The listing contains false, misleading, or harmful content
- The account is being used in breach of these terms
- We receive a valid complaint or legal request relating to the listing
In addition, we retain the right to remove any charity listing at any time and for any reason at our sole discretion. Where a listing is removed by us (rather than by the charity administrator), we will refund the subscription fee paid for the current billing month in full. No refund is due where a listing is removed as a result of a breach of these terms, or where the charity administrator has requested removal themselves.
Where possible we will notify you before taking action and give you the opportunity to respond. In urgent cases we may act immediately.
7. Your content
By submitting content to the platform (descriptions, metrics, documents, logos) you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display that content on the platform for the purpose of operating the service. You retain ownership of your content. You may remove it at any time by updating your profile or deleting your account.
You confirm that you have the right to submit any content you upload and that it does not infringe third-party intellectual property rights.
8. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we exclude all liability for indirect or consequential losses arising from use of the platform. Our total liability to you in connection with these terms shall not exceed the fees you have paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will notify charity administrators by email at least 14 days before material changes take effect. Continued use of the platform after that date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
If you do not wish to accept updated terms, you must cancel your subscription before the date the changes take effect. Cancellation can be done at any time from your account settings. Continuing to use the platform or maintaining an active subscription after the effective date will be treated as acceptance of the new terms, regardless of whether you have read them. No refund will be due for any remaining subscription period where you choose to cancel in response to a terms update.
